Community Funding


Hamilton City Council manages a range of funds which make grants to non-profit organisations in our community.

A key focus for the Council is ensuring as many organisations as possible are eligible to apply for community grants –our staff are here to help your group ensure it meets our criteria and can make a strong case for receiving a grant.

Our g​​​​​rant schemes​

Single-Year Community Grants

This is an annual grants round that supports small community-led projects helping make Hamilton a great place to live.

The Single-Year Community Grants application period is in March of every year, with successful and unsuccessful applicants notified in May.​

Multi-Year Community Grants

These are three-year grants for groups providing community infrastructure benefitting the social, cultural, arts and environment well-being of communities in Hamilton.  ​

The Multi-Year Community Grants application period is expected to be in late 2017, with successful and unsuccessful applicants notified in early 2018. (NB: Specific timeframes are to be confirmed.)

Creative Communities Scheme

The Creative Communities Scheme makes annual grants to support and encourages local communities to create, access and participate in arts activities.  This funding is delivered by Creative Waikato on behalf of Hamilton City Council. These grant rounds are available annually in August and March.​

Waste Minimisation Fund 

The Waste Minimisation Fund supports waste minimisation projects which encourage community participation and education, are of benefit to the community of Hamilton and lead to long-term waste minimisation action and behaviour change. The fund has $50,000 to distribute annually with one funding round in September per year. Applicants can apply for funding from $1,000 to $15,000. More information is available at

Applications for the Waste Minimisation Fund can be made in September, with successful and unsuccessful applicants notified in November.

Heritage Fund

Apply annually in July ($100,000) An annual grant for the protection, conservation and restoration of heritage listed buildings and archaeological sites within Hamilton.

Applications will be considered from private individuals, companies and non-profit organisations/groups.
