With only a week to go to for potential candidates to put their hat in the ring for the upcoming Triennial elections, the list of nominees remains alarmingly low.

Finance and Administration manager Blair Bowcott says that given the number of seats to be filled, the level of registered candidates at this point in time is disappointing.

"So far we have two nominations for the position of Mayor and only seven nominations for Councillors, despite there being 12 Councillor positions available at Hamilton City Council."

Mr Bowcott says that the concern is that if people leave their application to the last minute they risk missing out, as incomplete applications cannot be considered as valid.

"It is common for the electoral office to have to revisit sections of the nomination papers with the applicant to ensure their eligibility", says Mr Bowcott.

Elections are required for the following positions:

  • Mayor (elected 'at large')
  • Councillors (12)
  • East Ward (6)
  • West Ward (6)

Nominations close at 12 noon on Friday, 24 August 2007.
