Those who have ever considered a career in local body politics get the opportunity to start the process from tomorrow [Friday, 27 July 2007] when nominations for the Triennial Local Government elections open.
Elections are to be held for Hamilton City Council for the positions of Mayor and twelve Councillors, for Environment Waikato's four regional Councillors and for seven board members of Waikato District Health Board.
Finance and Administration manager Blair Bowcott says that the Triennial Local Government elections offer the unique opportunity for members of the community to stand for election and make a direct contribution to the city.
"Elections are an exciting time. Every three years we have a different set of factors; vacancies, incumbents, potential candidates and political environment. The opening of the nomination period really marks the start of what will be a fascinating and busy few months."
To stand for office as an elected representative candidates must be over 18 years of age, registered on the electoral roll and be a New Zealand citizen.
Interested parties can pick up a candidates information pack and nomination forms from the Electoral Office at Hamilton City Council, Level 1, Municipal Building, Garden Place. They can also be downloaded from www.hamilton.co.nz/elections or can be mailed by calling 0800 COUNCIL (0800 26 86 24).
Candidates require two people to nominate them. These people must be on the electoral roll in the ward or constituency the candidate wishes to represent.
Nomination forms must be handed in before 12 noon on Friday 24 August 2007. Voting papers will be distributed from 21 September with the Elections concluding on 13 October 2007.
