Hamilton City Council CEO Tony Marryatt has resigned his position to take up the CEO job at Christchurch City Council.

Mr Marryatt has been chief executive at HCC for more than 11 years and recently had his contract in Hamilton renewed for a further five years.

Hamilton mayor Michael Redman says it is naturally disappointing to lose a CEO who has had so much experience working in local government.

"Of course we are sorry that Tony is going, however we understand his reasons for wanting to move to a bigger job in Christchurch after achieving so much during his time in Hamilton.

"People with Tony's experience are few in number and there is no doubt he has made a significant contribution to the development of Hamilton during his time here. It is crucial to have a top performing local government organisation in order to be able to deliver the ongoing benefits to ratepayers, and during his time at the helm, Tony has seen HCC rank consistently high with its customers, the residents of Hamilton.

"We wish him all the best for his new role in Christchurch," says Mr Redman.

Tony Marryatt says while he is sorry to be leaving Hamilton, the opportunity to fill a CEO position at a large metropolitan city council is extremely rare.

"I have always thought the Christchurch job is the only one I would leave Hamilton for, yet it was always going to be a difficult decision given that there is never an ideal time to leave a city that is going through such a dynamic period of advancement. In addition the decision has been made more difficult by my recent reappointment as CEO in Hamilton for another five years.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hamilton City Council. The city has grown and developed substantially in the last ten years which has provided some exciting and challenging times. Equally I have been lucky enough to work with some outstanding people at Council, both politicians and staff, and without them any accomplishments would have been impossible," says Mr Marryatt.

It is likely that Mr Marryatt will leave Hamilton towards the end of May. In the meantime Council will decide its process for the recruitment of a new chief executive.
