Hamilton’s popular Lake Domain playground will undergo a significant transformation over coming weeks.

The playground, on the eastern side of Lake Rotoroa and near The Verandah Cafe, will be off-limits for about eight weeks while contractors working on behalf of Hamilton City Council install a range of new equipment.

Sally Sheedy, Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Manager, says the scale of the work requires a full closure of the playground (closest to The Verandah) with old equipment to be removed before new equipment is installed.

“Our contractors will need access to the site for an extended period, and with machinery and heavy vehicles involved, we will need to close off the area,” Miss Sheedy says.

“There will be some road closures and pressure on parking within the domain when larger equipment is required on site. We apologise for this inconvenience, but we are confident that come summer, families will enjoy the results.”

Mayor Julie Hardaker says the Lake Domain playground is one of the most visited public spaces in the city, and the new equipment will reflect Council’s goal of creating a city for families.

“Our Playgrounds Policy puts an emphasis on destination playgrounds in popular locations, and this project is one of the first tangible results of that,” Mayor Hardaker says.

“Our playgrounds development programme has enabled us to develop playgrounds at Parana Park and over the next few weeks, Lake Domain.”

The work on the Lake Domain playground begins on 13 October, although the junior playground and swings will remain available for park visitors.

Some of the old equipment is to be placed in storage with a view to being used elsewhere. While part of the Lake Domain playground is unavailable, the nearest alternative playground for families to enjoy is on the opposite side of Lake Rotoroa, near Hamilton Yacht Club.
