Parking in Hamilton’s CBD has been made easier with the introduction this week of free parking before 9am and after 3pm, Monday to Saturday. The change applies to around 650 on-street parking spaces from London Street south, with the meters displaying special promotional signage.
The posted time limits (usually two hours maximum) will still apply. Other metered parks in the city are unchanged, and are $2 per hour with a two-hour maximum, but all metered parks are free on Sundays and public holidays.
The new parking offer is one of the initiatives in Hamilton’s Central City Transformation Plan, and City Transport Manager Jason Harrison says the change reflects feedback from the community.
“It means people can pop into the city for a breakfast meeting, or do some after-school shopping without having to find money for the meters,” Mr Harrison says.
“We’ve found a balance between ensuring our central city parks aren’t taken up with all-day parking by inner city workers, while still providing free access for shoppers and people wanting to enjoy the hospitality and entertainment in the city.
“We’ve had some great feedback from the Hamilton Central Business Association and we believe the new parking offering will support initiatives from businesses to promote the CBD.”
