More than 50 volunteers will help deliver Hamilton’s biggest mid-week sporting fixture in decades when the Chiefs play the British & Irish Lions tomorrow night.

The DHL New Zealand Lions Series has reached the city, with the arrival of the combined British and Irish team for the sixth match of the tour. It will be the first time the British & Irish Lions have played the Chiefs, the two-time Super Rugby Champions who play the majority of their home matches at FMG Stadium Waikato.

Chad Hooker, Hamilton City Council’s Major Events Director, says the volunteers range in age and come from a wide variety of personal backgrounds. They will be welcoming and directing patrons attending tomorrow night’s match, and are integral to ensuring fans have an enjoyable experience.

“For many people coming to FMG Stadium Waikato for tomorrow night’s game, the volunteers will be their first point of contact,” Mr Hooker says.

“The volunteers are an enthusiastic and eager group, and include staff members from across the Council and the community, while others are involved in the H3 Volunteer Programme.”

The volunteers attended a briefing session last week to prepare for their roles on game night, and some have volunteered at recent Chiefs games at FMG Stadium Waikato so are familiar with the venue and match operations.

The volunteers will be easily spotted in their branded jackets, sponsored by ASB.

ASB Executive General Manager Marketing and Communications Roger Beaumont says volunteers are crucial to ensuring sporting events of the 2017 DHL New Zealand Lions series calibre run smoothly.

“ASB is particularly pleased to sponsor the 500-strong group of volunteers across the country and lend our support. We thank them in advance for their hard work and commitment to ensuring the series is a success,” Mr Beaumont says.

The involvement of volunteers in the Hamilton match also coincides with National Volunteer Week, which runs from 18 June to 24 June.

Tuesday’s match kicks off at 7.30pm, and gates at FMG Stadium Waikato will open at 5.30pm.

NZ Rugby has announced a limited number of additional tickets for the Chiefs vs British & Irish Lions are now on sale. Fans are encouraged to get in quick and make sure our home colours are strong and Hamilton is out-roaring the Lions. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.nzlionsseries17.com
