Several of Hamilton’s riverside paths are closed today as the Waikato River level rises amid ongoing wet weather.

With the region lashed by rain in recent days, the river has inundated several adjacent paths, and Hamilton City Council has closed a number of gates and paths.

The closed areas are:

  • Pine Beach Esplanade
  • Fairfield Esplanade
  • Matakanohi Walkway
  • Grantham St car park
  • Roose Commerce Park.

There are also longer-term closures in effect:

  • Below the Victoria on the River construction site
  • Te Hikuwai walkway
  • Kirikiriroa Reserve.

Pedestrians and cyclists are urged to exercise particular caution using other river paths due to river water volumes and slippery surfaces, and not progress closed gates.

The weather forecast for the region over the next 10 days includes ongoing significant rainfall and the paths and gates may be closed for extended periods as a result.
