Hamilton residents and visitors are invited to the official opening for Victoria on the River (VOTR) on Thursday 25 January.
The event will officially start at 5pm. There will be live music performances as well as food available to purchase.
VOTR is one of the major projects in Hamilton City Council's Central City Transformation Plan. The Council purchased the site in 2009, and committed funding to the project in late 2015.
The expansive amphitheatre-style park will open up the central city to the riverbank and provide a location for shoppers, visitors and central city workers to relax, unwind, socialise and enjoy Hamilton's defining geographical feature – the Waikato River.
Hamilton Mayor Andrew King is excited about the opening of VOTR.
“VOTR is a great new addition to Hamilton and the central city. For many years we have talked about opening the city to the river and this space shows what is possible when our urban centre embraces our natural environment,” Mayor Andrew says.
“This is a fantastic asset for Hamilton and another feature which will bring pleasure and enjoyment to generations.”
The site is opening two months ahead of schedule after better-than-expected weather allowed construction to proceed faster.
The entrance for VOTR is located on Victoria Street opposite the end of Collingwood Street. The Te Awa river path section below the site, closed during construction, will re-open on Thursday.
