An application from The Hood to renew its on-licence to sell alcohol has been declined.

The Hamilton District Licensing Committee, who determines applications for alcohol licences and managers' certificates, has released its decision after almost a two-year long process. The committee is independent from Hamilton City Council.

In its written decision, the committee noted Police objected the renewal.

“The rest of the city suffers due to the fact that the vast majority of Police on duty are standing directly outside The Hood for over one hour on a Saturday and Sunday morning,” said the decision.

“If the renewal of the licence is refused, there will no longer be large crowds gathering outside The Hood and therefore the likelihood of general disorder and violence will be significantly reduced.”

The Hood has up to three months to close at its Victoria St location where it has been since March 2012.

The decision is subject to appeal.
