Making a splash
It's back for another year! On Saturday afternoon, 22 April 2017, Hamilton City Council's Waterworld pool complex opened its outdoor pool to dogs for 'Paws in the Pool'. This event invited Hamiltonians to bring their pooches to Waterworld for a doggie paddle and dive session between 1pm and 4pm.
'Paws in the Pool' was timed to take advantage of the change of season, once the pool had been officially closed to humans for the winter shutdown. That meant dogs could play in the water to their hearts' content, before the pool was emptied and cleaned prior to reopening to people again in the spring.
The event will be full of fun activities and a $2 entry fee (per pooch) raises funds for HURRAH and New Lives Animal Rescue. It was great to see such support for its first year, with people and their pets from all over Hamilton and beyond joining in.
Getting in the swim of things
As well as just splashing about, dogs can take part in the best retrieval competition in the pool. Particularly fashionable furries also can enjoy a twirl in the 'best dressed' competition. This year will even have more water play time than last year!
There was plenty for the dogs' two-legged companions to enjoy during the family-friendly day, including a bouncy castle, various stalls and a demonstration from the Newfoundland Club.
The first 'Paws in the Pool' was organised by the Hamilton City Council's Animal Education and Control Team and was kept afloat with support from Waterworld, The Breeze radio station and Eukanuba dog food.
