Lost and found dogs

What to do - lost dogs

If you have lost your dog please phone our Animal Education and Control Centre on 07 838 6664 to report it.

You can also phone us on the same number to see if you dog might be impounded with us. We are available by phone between 12.30pm to 4.30pm - or you can leave a message outside these hours.

If your dog is not at the centre, our staff can enter its name, description and other details into our 'Lost Dog Book' in case he/she turns up later on.

If you do this and your dog ends up making its own way home, please let us know so we can update our records.

What else can I do to help find my dog?

  • Call the SPCA (07 847 4868) and local vets.
  • Put your dog's details and/or photo on Trade MePets on the Net and Facebook. Another useful site is the Doglinks community portal page.
  • Door-knock your neighbourhood and  check any places your dog is used to going (ie, if you always go the same way when out walking).
  • Make fliers to distribute with a good photos, description and other relevant information as well as your contact details.
  • Make sure your details on any databases (ie, Council registration, vet database, etc) are up to date.
What to do - found dogs

If you find a dog in Hamilton, please phone the Council on 07 838 6699 to arrange collection or drop it directly to the Animal Education and Control Team at our centre at 217 Ellis Street (open 12.30pm to 4.30pm, seven days a week).

If we know who owns the dog (either through its registration tag details and/or its name tag details - or if it's on our kennel register), we'll get in touch with the owner(s) as soon as possible so they can come in and claim the dog and sort any relevant fees.

Remember, registration, microchipping and keeping your contact information up to date help to make sure that if your dog is found, it can be identified and you can be contacted quickly.

After seven days, unclaimed dogs become the property of Hamilton City Council. Every dog is assessed and if suitable, may be rehomed via our adoption programme.
