What to do about asbestos…
If you are in the process of planning work in a home, do you know if there could be asbestos lurking in places you may not have even thought of? Houses built, or had work done, between 1950 and 2000 are likely to have some asbestos.
The updated Asbestos Regulations say you will need to see if there is any asbestos or asbestos-containing materials (ACM) before any work starts if:
- it was built or installed before 1 January 2000, or
- asbestos has been identified, or
- asbestos is likely to be present from time to time.
If you’re not able to determine if there is (or isn’t) asbestos or ACM then you need to assume asbestos is present. If you do find asbestos, you must remove it before the work starts (unless demolition is required to gain access to the asbestos).
