As part of building a new community in Peacocke we need to consider how we can best allow people to move around by walking, cycling, bus or car. We need to think about how we can do this safely for all road users and how these new transport corridors will connect with the streets and paths we already have.
The east-west road (still to be named) will be a key road that connects Peacockes Road in the east with Ohaupo Rd/State Highway 3 (SH3) in the west.
Stage one includes building a portion of the east section of the new road at the same time as the new roundabout on Ohaupo Rd/SH3 to provide access to a new housing development. This work got under way in January 2020 and is expected to be finished by the end of 2020.
Stage two will include completing the final section of the road to link up with Peacockes Rd in the west. The design of the road is currently under way and work is not scheduled to begin until December 2022, with the full road open in mid-2024. The reason we're not starting sooner is this road will not be required until housing development in this area starts.
The new east-west road is budgeted to cost $34M.
Peacocke is being built with the support of $290.4M of the Government's Housing Infrastructure Fund, made up of a $180.3M 10-year interest-free loan and $110.1M of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency subsidies.
