Ruakura Road upgrade

Upgrading a section of Ruakura Road is underway which will create a safer environment for road users, pedestrians, and people on bikes.

Considered a priority project, the upgrade (between Wairere Drive and Silverdale Road) will provide a critical link to the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway, and support Council's commitment of shaping a city that's easy to live in and explore and connect.

Once complete, the upgrade will include traffic lights at the intersections of Ruakura Lane/Ruakura Road and Ruakura Road/Knighton Road as well as shared paths and dedicated cycleways for people to enjoy.

Temporary closure of Ruakura Lane

From today (Tuesday 14 September), until Friday 17 September Ruakura Lane will be temporarily closed.

The reason for the closure is so our team can carry out essential stormwater and pavement installation works, and given the proximity to the 110kV Transpower lines they are unable do this unless the overhead lines are out of service.

This means all access to Innovation Park and AgResearch will be through Bisley Road entrance (off Wairere Drive).  Vehicles that can't navigate the roundabout near the AgResearch entrance to Innovation Park will require special permission to come through the construction site to access their destination.

Pedestrians access from Ruakura Road onto Ruakura Lane will be retained.

What's happening now?

The Ruakura Road urban upgrade is being done in a staged approach.

  • Stage 1 (we are here now) - Ruakura Road, between Wairere Drive and Ruakura Lane, will be closed for approximately six weeks from the start of August. During this time Ruakura Road entrance to Nottingham Drive will be closed to road users.
  • Stage 2 - Ruakura Road, between Ruakura Lane and Knighton Road (section 2A on the map below), will be closed for approximately two weeks (Ruakura Lane will remain open but can only be accessed via Wairere Drive end of Ruakura Road).
  • Stage 3 – Ruakura Road, between Ruakura Lane and Silverdale Road (sections 2A and 2B on the map below), will be closed for approximately four weeks.
  • Stage 4 – Ruakura Road, between Knighton Road and Silverdale Road (section 2B on the map below), will be closed for approximately two weeks.

Diversions will be in place for Orbiter buses - visit for more information.

We know this work will cause disruption and we have considered alternatives. However, this approach was considered the most efficient overall and means we can get in and do the work as fast as possible.
