The Peak is a 3470sq m indoor sports venue on the site of the Rototuna Senior and Junior High Schools in Hamilton's northeastern suburbs.
The $9.2 million facility opened in August 2017 then-Prime Minister Bill English, and result from a partnership between the Ministry of Education, the Rototuna High Schools' Establishment Board of Trustees and Hamilton City Council.
Through this partnership the community, through the Council's vision and commitment to development, has developed a much-needed community asset at a cost to rate payers less than half of the cost of building the facility as the sole developer.
Guided by the Regional Sports Facilities Plan extended partners in Sport Waikato and Sport New Zealand have been instrumental in progressing, advising and guiding this approach.
The Peak meets the needs of a growing city, increasing Hamilton's available indoor court space for competitive and community sports such as netball, basketball, volleyball and the fast-growing indoor football code futsal.
A wooden sprung floor and changing rooms are other features of what is a key venue for the region's indoor sports.
The Peak is open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm, delivering a large volume of available court hours for the sports played there.
Bookings can be made through a special online portal on the facility's website.
The Peak is managed by the Rototuna Indoor Recreation Centre Trust, comprising representatives of the partner organisations and regional sports organisation Sport Waikato.
The Peak also excels in terms of environmental sustainability. It features energy efficient LED lighting, a modern efficient heating and air-conditioning system.
The focus for The Peak was to build a centre robust in form and materials. It features energy efficient LED lighting with sensor controls to minimise power consumption. The roof is a warm roof, with insulation on top of the structure to minimise any condensation issues and to reduce the impact of cold winters and hot summers. An integrated ventilation system was incorporated to ensure effective air changes for the comfort of the people using The Peak. The radiant heating installed is more energy efficient than other heating methods traditionally used in facilities of this kind.
The facility was designed to provide excellent value for money during construction, resulting in a facility requiring a simple maintenance regime to keep it in great condition.
The Peak is a response to a long-term and well-known community need – a lack of indoor court space in the Hamilton-Waikato region. It also one of nine priority projects for the region from the Waikato Regional Sports Facilities Plan, a partnered project delivering outcomes for the community. The Waikato Regional Sports Facilities Plan is a collaborative project delivered across nine local authorities in partnership with Sport Waikato and Sport New Zealand.
