What does this mean for Hamilton Gardens?

The safety and wellbeing of our community, our visitors and our team members is our number one priority. We are closely monitoring the advice from the Government and Ministry of Health and will be updating our customers via our website and social media platforms as new information becomes available.

Are we open?

No. Hamilton Gardens is now fully closed with no public access to open spaces, themed gardens, the Information Centre and the café. Gates to the Gardens carparks will be locked from Wednesday evening (25 March). Keep an eye on this website and our Facebook page for more information on how we're responding to COVID-19. As soon as Hamilton Gardens can open again, we'll be shouting it from the rooftops!

Why are the Gardens closed?
The country is now at Alert Level 3, which means all public spaces must close. Alert Level 4 takes effect from midnight Wednesday (25 March) for four weeks and means everyone must stay at home unless they work in an essential service.

Why can't I use the open spaces if I keep my distance?
The only way to keep our community safe and slow the spread of COVID-19 is to stay at home. The Government has said people can still leave their homes to get fresh air, but we know from overseas this means staying close to home and not travelling outside your neighbourhood.

Can I use the playground?
All playgrounds across the city have been closed. The virus can stay on plastic and metal for up to three days so touching playground equipment puts children at risk. Children are also used to playing closely together and we can't expect them to remember the new physical distancing rules (staying two metres apart) in the excitement of the moment. We have signs in all our parks and playgrounds explaining why they are closed.

What will happen to the Gardens?
Our team members will still be taking care of the Gardens while maintaining physical distancing. You can expect the Gardens to still be in great condition when life gets back to normal.

What if people keep using the Gardens anyway?

The Government has warned we could be at Alert Level 4 for longer if people don't stick to the rules and limit their movements to the essential only. It's tough, but essential activities means picking up groceries or refuelling the car, not visiting the rose gardens.

Are there events happening?
No. There will be no events at Hamilton Gardens over the next four weeks. At Alert Levels 3 and 4, all indoor or outside events must be cancelled. Even if physical distancing could be maintained, the message is very clear: stay at home and look after yourself and our community. All tours of Hamilton Gardens have been suspended.
