The safety and wellbeing of our wildlife and everyone who visits Hamilton Zoo is our priority. We are closely monitoring the advice from the Government and Ministry of Health, and will be updating our guests via our website and social media platforms as new information becomes available.
Are we open?
Effective Sunday 22 March the Hamilton Zoo will be closed to the public as a precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19.
There's so much open space, why do you need to close the Zoo?
As well as protecting our community and our staff, the decision to close Hamilton Zoo protects our animals in the best way that we can.
Our animals are vulnerable to viruses carried by humans and we cannot take the risk of exposing them when we have little information about the effect COVID-19 has on animals and the best treatment options.
I have an annual pass to the Zoo, what happens with that?
Annual passes will be extended to ensure that customers get the full 12 months. Once the Zoo reopens, pass holders will be able to present their pass to be updated.
I have an encounter voucher, what happens with that?
Hamilton Zoo will honour all encounter vouchers when the Zoo reopens.
I have a GrabOne Voucher, what happens with that?
Hamilton Zoo will honour all GrabOne vouchers which expired during the closure when the Zoo reopens.
What about the animals?
Everyone's fine. Our experienced and dedicated staff will continue to care for and feed the Zoo's more than 600 animals whatever the alert level. Care for our zoo animals is considered an essential service. Watch the Hamilton Zoo website over the next few weeks for videos and educational material about our zoo family.
Will this delay the chimps enclosure upgrade?
The enclosure revamp is an essential project and construction work will continue with physical distancing protocols observed. We still expect to have the upgrade finished by the end of winter.
