Hamilton has more than 80 playgrounds on parks within the city limits.

Most of these are local playgrounds on neighbourhood parks, consisting of a slide, swing and seesaw,  although many have additional equipment for the community's children to enjoy.

A key feature of Hamilton City Council's development of playgrounds is the Playgrounds of the Future plan. The plan sets out a goal of developing 15 destination playgrounds before 2029. We've already developed seven of those at Hamilton Lake Domain, Parana Park, Claudelands Park, Tauhara Park, Minogue Park, Dominion Park and Hamilton Gardens. These playgrounds include diverse play equipment generally aimed at children between the ages of 0-14. Destination playgrounds invoke a sense of adventure in the children who use them and provide a great social atmosphere  and keep the children active and healthy.

Current projects

During the 2019-20 financial year we will be replacing or upgrading several playgrounds across the city.

Melville Park: A renewal and upgrade of the Melville skate park and playground. Keep up to date with the project here

Hamilton Lake Domain: A renewal of the lower level lakeside playground area on the eastern side of the Domain, including the swings, sand play and fenced junior area. We will be talking to the community later in the year about what currently works well and what could be improved with this space.

Jansen Park: A basic neighbourhood playground replacement. This will likely include a small play unit, swings and see saws.

Discovery Park: A basic neighbourhood playground replacement. This will likely include a half basketball court, swings and timber play.

Innes Common: Located at the popular Hamilton Lake Domain, the playground will include swings, carousel, slackline and timber play. There will also be a parkour area, basketball court and exercise equipment.

Inuwai Street Park, Dixon Heights: We will be talking to the local community later in the year about what residents would like to see in this new neighbourhood playground.

Projects for the 2020-21 financial year will include upgrades to Glenview Park, Hayes Paddock,  Hammond Park, Claudelands Park and Elliott Park playground and skate area.
