Waikato Expressway – Hamilton Section – Ruakura Interchange

Ruakura Interchange – Publicly Notified Notices of Requirement

Hamilton City Council and Waikato District Council have received Notices of Requirement (NoRs) from the NZ Transport Agency (as requiring authority) to alter the existing designations for the Hamilton Section of the Waikato Expressway to enable the construction, operation and maintenance of the Ruakura Interchange.  A location and layout plan is provided below.

The NoRs involve the widening of the existing designations to accommodate the Ruakura Interchange ramps, connecting roundabouts and a stormwater wetland. The NoRs are intended to enable a direct link between the proposed Inland Port/Logistics and Industrial Areas of the Ruakura Development to the Expressway. Other works associated with the NoRs include:

  • The closure of the existing Ruakura Road either side of the Expressway and consequently shortening of the proposed bridge over the East Coast Main Trunk (ECMT) rail line.
  • Retention of the existing Ruakura Road either side of the closure at the Expressway in order to provide continued property access to residents on Ruakura Road, including access to Percival and Ryburn Roads as currently provided.
  • Relocation of Ruakura Road between the Ruakura Road/Silverdale Road intersection and the existing Ruakura Road near the Vaile Road intersection to connect with the proposed Ruakura Interchange and other consequential changes to intersections.

If the NoRs are confirmed and the Ruakura Interchange is able to be constructed at the same time as the remainder of the Hamilton Section of the Waikato Expressway, then the NZ Transport Agency will not construct the currently designated north facing ramps at State Highway 26 (Morrinsville Road).

The NOR was publicly notified on Wednesday 24 September 2014.
