The Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) places an obligation on all workers to use and wear PPE that has been provided by their employer. Council also has a primary 'duty of care' to take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure worker's health and safety whilst at work. This 'duty of care' also applies to our contractors, volunteers and visitors who undertake work in Council workplaces.
Council's Current Best Practice (CBP) document "Personal Protective Equipment' sets out the requirements for working outdoors in the sun and the level of PPE required. Contractors should familiarise themselves with the Council CBP "Personal Protective Equipment' to ensure compliance with Council's risk management procedures.
The mandatory period for wearing sun protection while working outside is from 1 October to 1 April. Outside the period 1 October to 1 April, the requirements will be as determined by a risk assessment based on the UV Index reading for that day, to determine the type of protective clothing to wear.
