Paula was elected to Council in 2016 and is the current Chairperson of the Community and Services Committee.
Prior to that Paula was a Hamilton representative on the Waikato Regional Council for 15 years, culminating in being its Chairperson in her last term from 2013 to 2016.
She held a number of portfolios including Policy and Strategy, Transport and Environment, and was a member of the Environmental Policy Advisory Group and Conference Committee for Local Government New Zealand.
Paula supports the River Plan and believes the best results can be achieved by the Council working in partnership with the private sector and the community.
Her long-term commitment to the environment has seen her involved in a range of conservation projects, most notably being in the small 'Halo' project team that bought tui back into the city.
Paula has a strong governance background outside of local government, having been Chairperson of the boards of Knighton Normal School, Hamilton Girls' High School and the Waikato Sustainable Business Network.
She has formal qualifications in Social Studies, Education, Governance and Management and strong work experience in education and the social and community services sector. She continues to work in schools with youth and is a regular public speaker at community and learning events. Her current personal development focus is on mediation, conflict resolution and leadership.
Raised in Hamilton, her schooling was at Hamilton Girls' High School and The University of Waikato. Prior to entering public office, she worked as a teacher and a counsellor in the mental health sector.
Paula is married to Greg and has two daughters, Hannah and Caitlin, and a step-son, Iain. She enjoys watching her daughters play netball at Minogue Park and lacrosse at Melville Park, and helping Iain in pub quizzes.
She does ballroom dancing at Footwork Studio and, with her husband Greg, plays basketball at the YMCA. She enjoys the Hamilton Gardens, river walks, the cinema and the city's cafes and restaurants. A big fan of events of all kinds, Paula can be seen at The Farmers Market, Hamilton Garden Arts Festival and local ethnic events such as the Median Festival.
"Governance is a challenging environment, but I believe robust debate is healthy. Good leadership is about looking for win-win outcomes and harnessing the potential of people."
