Don’t be surprised if you are one of only a few people moving in Garden Place about 12.30pm on Friday.

The city’s main public square is the location for a “Flash Freeze” event during which participants will spontaneously freeze on the spot to show their support for White Ribbon Day, a one-day nationwide campaign to condemn violence against women. Participants in the Flash Freeze are urged to wear black and white, or the campaign’s White Ribbon.

Stacey Ward, Hamilton City Council Youth Advisor and Flash Freeze co-organiser, says the Flash Freeze will start at 12.30pm.

“Domestic violence is a major issue for Hamilton communities and affects many families in our city – that’s why Council is involved in this event. It’s easy to take part in the Flash Freeze, just simply freeze for three minutes and enjoy being part of a spectacle in Garden Place and to support a great cause,” Miss Ward says. “If you would like to join us, a briefing for all participants will be held at 12.15 on Friday November 25 in Civic Square.”

Hamilton’s Giant White Ribbon will also be on display, and members of the public and Flash Freeze participants are encouraged to sign it to show their support.

The event is a collaboration between Hamilton City Council and Hamilton Abuse Intervention Trust (HAIP).

HAIP General Manger Lila Jones says: “It’s an opportunity for people to really get involved in the issue of family violence. Through the Flash Freeze and White Ribbon Day, people can show their commitment to stopping this unacceptable behaviour, speak out or report it if they are aware is happening near them or to someone they know, or offer personal support to someone who has been affected.
