13 March 2009
The second phase of Hamilton's CityHeart project begins soon with construction along Victoria Street between Collingwood and Alma Streets. The revitalisation work requires the closure of the southbound traffic lane until the end of June.
A detour will be in effect from 9am on Monday 23 March. During the week of the Hamilton 400 event, the road will be reopened for normal traffic flow from the evening of Wednesday, 15 April until 9am Monday, 20 April. The road will be closed again after the event and will remain closed until late June.
During the road closure businesses along this section of Victoria Street will operate as usual and access will be maintained to all Victoria and Alma Street businesses.
Victoria Street traffic heading southbound will be diverted onto alternative streets, however access will be maintained to Alma Street and all other right of way accesses servicing premises on the east side of Victoria Street throughout the construction period.
As a result of this southbound lane closure, congestion can be expected to increase within the wider roading network, including the following areas:
East side of Claudelands Bridge, at the traffic lights heading away from the city
Anglesea St (London - Hood) - southbound
Tristram St (Ward - Thackeray) - southbound
Bryce St (Victoria - Tristram) - westbound
Ward St (Anglesea - Tristram) - westbound
The CityHeart project is underway to create spaces in Hamilton that provide improved connectivity and better reflect our city's identity. Plans for Victoria Street, particularly from Bryce Street to Hood Street, will result in a more pedestrian friendly and traffic calmed zone and encourage a corridor for destination traffic rather than through traffic.
