A 38 square metre screen will be set up in Garden Place Hamilton to broadcast the state funeral of Sir Edmund Hillary next Tuesday [22 January 2008].

The screen will show the live broadcast of the service to be held at St Mary's Church in Parnell. The large screen will be positioned so members of the public can gather together on the green and share in the service. The state funeral for Sir Edmund Hillary is expected to be the largest in New Zealand history.

Hamilton mayor Bob Simcock is to host the event and will make a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary prior to the broadcast.

The morning's format will be as follows:

10am Screening of television coverage commences
10.40am Local tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary
11am Live broadcast of funeral service from St Mary's Church, Auckland

A commemorative service is also to be held on Tuesday 22 January at the Cathedral Church of St Peter on Victoria St, also including a live broadcast of the funeral at St Mary's.
