Next week sees the start of major works along Mill St to prepare the street circuit for the V8 Supercars event next April.

A schedule of works is planned for the coming year to prepare the 3.4km Frankton/city circuit for the seven year race.

Current and future works planned include:

  • The median along Mill St will be removed, and the road surface reshaped and resealed to make the road surface flatter for racing. Work is expected to take 2-3 weeks, but is weather dependent.
  • Following that work will then progress to Tristram St where resealing of the road surface will happen between Mill and London Sts.
  • The roundabout at Tristram and Rostrevor Sts is also being removed and replaced with a removable roundabout constructed of recycled rubber which locks together in sections. This innovative construction means it can be installed or deconstructed in less than 2 hours.
  • Relocation of gas and electricity services at Norton Rd roundabout.
  • Manhole covers throughout the circuit will also be replaced in the coming months with covers which bolt down. These ensure the manhole covers don’t fly up when being driven over at high speed during racing.
  • Trees which have been agreed for removal as part of the resource consent, and in agreement with Waikato Tree Trust, will be marked in preparation for their removal after leaf fall has finished, in late June. Those trees being transplanted will also be moved in July when they are most dormant.
  • The final significant works will see the start of ground works on the south side of Mill St where Pit Lane race control and team garages will be located. This is scheduled to start in July.

In all cases contractors will be working to ensure minimal disruption, including where possible carrying out some work at weekends and evenings. However some minor traffic disruptions should be expected at times.
