Bus patronage levels in Hamilton are at an all time high with the 2 million journey mark past in March and 2.5 million rides forecast for the full financial year.

Councillor and Transport Committee chair Dave Macpherson today congratulated Environment Waikato staff for their contribution towards achieving Access Hamilton's objective of providing an accessible and viable public transport service for the city.

"Management and minimisation of the impact of private cars in the city is a critical but challenging piece of the Access Hamilton strategy. The recent rapid uptake in public transportation is great news for everyone who lives in the city. We know that Council-proposed initiatives such as the Orbiter, CBD Shuttle and Chartwell Direct have been the major drivers to this growth and we are thrilled at their success.

"Council equally subsidizes these important new services with EW and will continue to work actively together to ensure similarly important services are included in the rapidly growing bus network".

Cr Macpherson says that the free bus initiative this Saturday is a great way to celebrate while tempting more people into trying out public transport.

"I hope large numbers of Hamilton residents make the most of this great offer on Saturday by jumping on a bus and being pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to get around Hamilton on public transport."
