A three-month project involving the exterior repainting of Council's Municipal building in Garden Place is scheduled to begin in mid-February.
The $435,000 project encompasses the Council tower block, Chamber wing and Community Building that faces onto Caro Street. The works will be delivered over three months and in three stages.
Stage one began on 30 January and involves the washing of the Municipal Building.
In mid-February, stage two will begin involving surface preparation and paint. Stage two will be carried out in three phases being: the tower block west-side; Council Chamber wing and Community Building; and tower block east-side respectively.
The third stage of the project involves the fitting of bird-proofing in window areas to shield repainted surfaces from frequenting pigeons. The bird proofing will also be installed in three phases. The tower block west-side will be fitted with plastic fibre netting by late March. Repellent spikes will be fitted to the Council Chamber wing and Community Building by the end of April and plastic fibre netting will be fitted to the tower block east-side by mid-May.
Property and Risk manager Ray Pooley says the repainting project is part of Council's ongoing maintenance programme and will be underpinned by a quality monitoring system.
"The Municipal Building was last repainted in 1996. Essentially the project is of a maintenance nature as minor repairs will also be carried out on the building as part of the works. We've contracted an independent quality assurance company to monitor the quality of each stage of work and implement a quality system throughout the project.
"Council has agreed upon an approved colour scheme to enhance the appearance of the building while ensuring the building is maintained to an appropriate standard."
