Council has partnered with Transit New Zealand to deliver a significant Access Hamilton project ahead of schedule to achieve four-laning of Wairere Drive from Te Rapa Road to Pukete Road by April 2007.

The four-laning project was initially scheduled for delivery under Council's 2006-16 Long Term Plan in 2008/09. As a result of four-laning improvements being carried out by Transit on Te Rapa Road outside The Base, Council has negotiated to have Transit's contractor and consultants on-site carry out the work on Wairere Drive to accelerate this process. The cost of the project is $600,000.

Site-clearing and earthworks are currently underway in preparation for drainage works and utility services which are scheduled for completion in February. Pavement construction will be carried out through March while the final stage comprising traffic island repositioning, surfacing and road marking will be completed in April.

Council's Transport Committee chair Dave Macpherson says the project signifies Council's commitment to delivering key outcomes under Access Hamilton and a pro-active approach to addressing traffic issues in the city.

"Council recognises the north area of the city as experiencing significant traffic congestion on arterial routes and saw an opportunity to deliver a more swift response to the need for improved infrastructure that arises from the demand for significant industrial growth in the area."

Traffic can expect some delays throughout the project, however, these will be mitigated by the existing two-lanes which will remain open during most of the work.

A traffic management plan will be in place to respond to the various stages of construction and includes signage.
