How do I report a vehicle on the road which I think may have been abandoned?
If there is a vehicle on the road that you suspect has been abandoned, you can notify the Hamilton City Council parking team by calling 07 838 6699 during office hours and giving as much information as possible such as registration number, make, colour and location where vehicle is parked.
Once the report has been logged, Hamilton City Council is required to follow a statutory process.
These processes begin when the Council investigates the report, not from when the vehicle was originally parked. So if you report a vehicle that has already been in place for several weeks, we are still required to follow the same steps.
In some cases, such as when the vehicle presents a hazard, it can be moved immediately. Once the Council is notified, a parking officer inspects the vehicle, and may issue an infringement notice and a warning notice that the vehicle may be towed. A further notice of towing may then be issued, before police are notified and the vehicle towed and disposed of. The process can take over two weeks in some circumstances, but is required under law.
What can I do if I think a vehicle is parked illegally?
If there is a vehicle that you believe is parked illegally (for example: parked facing the wrong way on the street, parked over or within 1 metre of a driveway, parked on yellow lines, illegally parked in a mobility space) you can notify the Hamilton City Council parking team by calling 07 838 6699 during office hours.
A Parking Officer will attend as soon as is practicable to do so.
